A two-time First Team All-American, Dru was honored as the 2012 NorPac Player of the Year, earning the distinction for the second straight season and collecting her fifth conference award overall. A native of Buckinghamshire, England, Dru led the Cardinal in goals (12), assists (12), points (36), shots (65) and game-winning goals (3) this season. Arguably one of the most decorated players in school history, Dru totaled 54 goals, 36 assists, 144 points, 311 shots and 15 game-winning goals in 87 career games.

Harbin continued to emerge as one of the nation’s elite young players, tabbed an All-NorPac selection while earning the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award. A native of Escondido, Calif., Harbin totaled 15 points (five goals, five assists) this year while attempting 34 shots and sharing the team lead with Dru in game-winning goals (3). In addition to racking up two defensive saves, Harbin scored Stanford’s first goal in NCAA Tournament play since 2010 during a 4-1 loss to North Carolina last weekend. Harbin started all but three games this year, missing time in mid-September while representing the U.S. team at the Junior Pan American Championships.

Dru, Harbin and junior Hope Burke were named NFHCA All-West Region selections last week. The West Region comprises schools such as California, Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Louisville, Northwestern and Michigan State.

NOVEMBER 15, 2012 – Eight NorPac student-athletes were named to the 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region teams, announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Stanford’s Becky Dru and Kelsey Harbin, along with California’s Lara Kruggel and Longwood’s Stacey de Grandhomme were selected to the first-team in their respective regions. Cardinal junior Hope Burke, Davidson senior Sarah Fisher, Liberty freshman Natalie Barr and Bear junior Shannon Elmitt garnered second-team honors.

South (First Team)

Stacey de Grandhomme (Midfielder/Longwood)
This is the first All-Region First Team honor for Longwood since the institution transitioned to Division I prior to the 2007 season. The midfielder led the Lancers in 2012 with 17 goals and 38 total points. She was selected for the NorPac All-Tournament Team, as well as being named the NorPac East Division Player of the Year.

West (First Team)

Becky Dru (Defender, Stanford)
This is Dru’s third recognition. A 2011 NFHCA First Team All-American, Dru will likely receive strong consideration for the nation’s highest award again this year. Dru was honored as the 2011 NorPac Player of the Year, earning the distinction for the second straight season and collecting her fifth conference award overall. A native of Buckinghamshire, England, Dru led the Cardinal in goals (12), assists (12), points (36), shots (65) and game-winning goals (3) in 2012. Arguably one of the most decorated players in school history, Dru totaled 54 goals, 36 assists, 144 points, 311 shots and 15 game-winning goals in 87 career games.

Kelsey Harbin (Defender/Stanford)

Lara Kruggel (Forward/California)
Kruggel was the most consistent offensive weapon on the Golden Bears this year and her abilities did not go unnoticed by opposing teams. She finished the season 11th in the nation in points per game at 2.20. She was tied for eighth in goals per game at .90. She led the NorPac conference in both categories. Kruggel had an historic season as a Golden Bear. Her 18 goals and 44 points are both fifth on Cal’s all time single season records list. For her career, Kruggel is now tied for eighth on the all-time list with 26 goals. She is tenth on the all-time points list with 67.

South (Second Team)

Natalie Barr (Midfielder/Liberty)
The East’s Offensive Player of the Year, Barr finished the season with a team-best 16 goals, eight assists, 40 points, 100 shots and four defensive saves. She ended up second in the conference in points per game (2.0) and third in goals per game (0.8). Barr ranks tied for 18th in the nation in both points per game and goals per game. The midfielder also sits in 13th place in the country in defensive saves. Barr’s 16 goals and 40 points are the most among Division I freshmen this season.

Sarah Fisher (Goalkeeper/Davidson)
Previously named the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Year, the senior finished the season with a pair of shutouts after helping hold four opposing teams scoreless. Fisher ended the season with a 2.43 goals against average and a save percentage of .749, ranking 16th in the NCAA in that category. Her 164 saves in 2012 pushed her into third place on Davidson’s all-time saves list. She departs as the program’s all-time leader in minutes, having played 4,678 in her four years.

West (Second Team)

Hope Burke (Forward/Stanford)
Burke proved to be a reliable offensive weapon for the Cardinal, ranking second to Dru in goals (9), assists (9) and points (27). An All-NorPac selection for the first time in her career, Burke also attempted 35 shots while recording a pair of hat tricks during the year. A native of Selinsgrove, Ohio, native, started all 23 games for the Cardinal and will return as the team’s leading scorer in 2013.

Shannon Elmitt (Midfielder/California)
Elmitt paced the Bears in assists this season. She tallied nine helpers on the season and recorded .50 assists per game, a mark good for a tie for 35th in the nation. Her 27 career assists rank her sevent on Cal’s all-time list. She also scored two goals on the season.

The game will be played in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 8:30 a.m. PT. No. 8 Old Dominion and No. 9 Michigan face off in the second game at 11 a.m. PT. The winners will play each other on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. PT.

The first-round pairing represents a rematch from earlier this season, when the Tar Heels defeated the Cardinal 6-2 back on Sept. 23 in Chapel Hill, N.C. In that game, then-No. 1 North Carolina held advantages in shots (18-6) and penalty corners (7-4) while Jessica Chisholmand Hope Burke tallied goals for the Cardinal.

Prior to defeating Miami (OH) 4-1 in an NCAA Play-In game on Tuesday afternoon, Stanford captured its fifth NorPac Championship crown in six seasons over the weekend. The Cardinal, which checks in at No. 17 in the latest edition of the RPI, has been a fixture in the national rankings all year and for all but one week since the start of the 2010 campaign. The Cardinal navigated through a grueling non-conference schedule, compiling a 2-5 mark against top-25 teams while facing off against the nation’s No. 1-ranked team at the time of the game on three different occasions.

North Carolina won the program’s 18th ACC Championship last Sunday on its home field, beating Maryland 4-2 in the final. The Tar Heels, shooting for their seventh NCAA title, have played in the NCAA Championship game in four of the last five years, winning titles in 2007 and 2009 and finishing as the runner-up to Maryland in overtime in 2010 and 2011.

Meanwhile, Stanford is 0-11 all-time in NCAA Tournament competition. The Cardinal most recently qualified for the postseason last year, falling 5-0 at Duke in a first round match after earning an at-large bid for the first time in school history. Stanford also advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1995, 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

This year’s field includes 16 teams (five automatic bids, eight at-large berths and three play-in winners) competing in a single-elimination format. The 2012 NCAA Championship is slated for Nov. 16-18 in Norfolk, Va., and will be hosted by Old Dominion.

NOVEMBER 6, 2012 – FARMVILLE, Va. - No. 11 Stanford scored four unanswered first-half goals on the way to defeating Miami (OH) 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon in an NCAA Play-In game.

With the win, the Cardinal (16-6, 6-0 NorPac) punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament and will learn its postseason status during the selection show tonight at 5 p.m. PT. The Cardinal will be making its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and fifth over the last six years. Stanford is seeking its first postseason victory.

Riding a season-high seven-game winning streak, Stanford is playing its best at the most important time of the year. The Cardinal qualified for Tuesday’s NCAA Play-In game after capturing its fifth NorPac Championship title in six years during a dominating three-day stretch.

Stanford held a 19-11 edge in shots, highlighting a balanced offensive attack in which 10 different players fired off at least one attempt.

The RedHawks (12-10, 4-1 MAC) owned a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners. Miami (OH) goalkeeper Sarah Mueller made 13 saves in the loss.

Olivia Miller’s unassisted goal in the fourth minute put Miami (OH) in front 1-0.

However, Stanford responded quickly, with Emily Henriksson’s goal at the 7:42 mark evening the game at 1-1.

The Cardinal would ultimately put the game out of reach, thanks to an impressive three-goal barrage spanning seven minutes late in the first half.

After Becky Dru converted on a penalty stroke at the 28:19 mark, Hope Burke scored the first of her two goals just over a minute later for a 3-1 lead.

Burke struck again for her second goal of the day just 22 seconds before intermission, tipping in a pass from Dru following a direct corner.

Burke, Dru and Henriksson each attempted three shots for Stanford.

Dulcie Davies made five saves in goal for the Cardinal, which improved to 4-1 all-time in NCAA Play-In games.

Tuesday’s contest was a rematch from earlier this year, when Stanford defeated Miami (OH) 3-0 back on Sept. 1 in a neutral-site game played in East Lansing, Mich. In that game, Katie Mitchell scored a pair of goals while the Cardinal tallied a commanding 22-4 advantage in shot attempts.

FARMVILLE, Va. – No. 14 Stanford blanked Liberty 3-0 in the NorPac Championship final on Saturday afternoon, capturing its fifth conference tournament crown in six years and inching closer to its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.

After the last six NorPac Championship title games resulted in a Stanford-Cal matchup, the Cardinal was faced with a new challenge this year against conference newcomer Liberty, a fast-rising program in only its second year of existence.

The next step is familiar territory for Stanford (15-6, 6-0 NorPac). Because the NorPac Championship winner is not awarded an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Cardinal must participate in an NCAA Play-In game on Tuesday, Nov. 6, against the tournament champion from the MAC with a postseason bid on the line.

The stage is now set for a rematch between Stanford and Miami (OH), which defeated Kent State 2-1 earlier in the day in the MAC final. While the NorPac champion was originally designated as the host, the schools have received clearance from the NCAA to play the contest in Farmville, Va., in an effort to minimize travel and expenses. Stanford posted a 3-0 shutout of Miami (OH) back on Sept. 1 in a neutral-site game played in East Lansing, Mich.

So, Stanford will remain on the East Coast, excited to play one more game on the same field in which it just outscored opponents 11-2 over a dominating three-day stretch.

The Cardinal turned in another balanced offensive performance on Saturday, with 10 different players attempting at least one shot. Freshmen Maddie Secco and Lauren Becker scored in the last minute of the first half and first minute of the second half, respectively, while Becky Dru secured tournament MVP honors with an insurance goal in the 57th minute.

Saturday’s NorPac Championship felt different from the start. Stanford’s 6-2 semifinal victory against California on Friday squashed the possibility of a seventh straight final between the Bay Area programs. Instead, Liberty becomes only the second East Division program to reach the title game since Radford accomplished the feat in 2003.

After finishing 6-11 as an independent during its inaugural season in 2011, Liberty (16-6, 7-1 NorPac) entered this weekend’s tournament as the conference’s winningest team. Saturday’s loss to the Cardinal snapped a program-best eight-game winning streak.

The first half remained scoreless until the final minute, when Secco received a cross pass from Alex McCawley and fired it into the cage for her sixth goal of the year.

The Cardinal continued its momentum, extending its lead to 2-0 just 29 seconds into the second half. McCawley dished out her second assist, setting up Becker for her sixth goal with a deep pass from the right side.

In the 57th minute, Dru iced the game with her team-leading 11th goal of the year following a textbook penalty corner with assists from Shannon Herold and Hope Burke.

Dulcie Davies registered her seventh shutout of the year, making three saves in goal.
